Rain, Rain, and More Rain

Its been a very wet week so far. Over the weekend Kalona had about 2.5 to 3 inches of rain. At that point I thought our back yard looked like a lake. Then on Tuesday we had another 2 inches in about 30 minutes. It rained so hard and when I looked out my living room window to the street, all I saw was water rushing down the street and our yard was taken over by water. I immediately ran to the basement to check for water down there. We have had several issues with that in the past and when it rains so much in such a little time, along with the ground being so saturated with the previous rain, I was afraid we would have a mess. At the time we just had a small spot in the basement that was wet. I quickly got in my car and went to Mom and Dad's to check their basement because neither of them were at home. They had some water coming in one of the windows in the basement so I put some towels down and started some fans and went back home. I was at Mom and Dad's house about 10-15 minutes and when I got back to our house there was about 4 inches of water in our basement. Dad and Joe were both on their way home and I started carrying buckets of water up the stairs and out the door. It was a long afternoon but we finally got the water out and were able to get fans started to dry things out. Fortunately because of the rain over the weekend we had everything up and off the floor so we didn't have too much damage. Unfortunately I didn't think about grabbing my camera during this time so I don't have pictures to document the Fernau flood of 2010.

Baby Fernau at 20 weeks

During the busy roofing weekend, Joe and I had an appointment with the midwives and our 20 week Ultrasound. We have been waiting for this appointment for a long time and we were very excited to see our baby on the big screen. The ultrasound tech was very nice and explained everything very well. After she found out I was a NICU nurse she laughed and said most NICU nurses aren't that quiet. We had an awesome time watching our baby move and wave its arms and legs around. We were amazed at how much we could see and how clear some of the pictures were. Everything with Baby Fernau is great. It is about 14 oz and measuring perfectly. Here are a few of the pictures we have.

New mommy before the big appointment!

The top 2 pictures are Baby Fernau's profile. On the middle picture you can very faintly see its hand resting on the top of its head. The bottom picture is of the bottom of the foot.

The top picture is another profile shot and the bottom picture is a face shot.

New Roof!

We have known for a few years now that our roof would need new shingles soon. With the wedding last year we decided to put it off one more year so this was the year to do it. We had a lot of help from family, friends, and neighbors so it went a lot faster than we thought. We just have a few finishing touches and it will be done! While the guys were on the roof the rest of the family was in charge of food, drinks, and making sure they took breaks and put on sunscreen. It was very hot and with the sun shining they could only work on certain parts of the roof at certain times so we found ourselves moving our lawn chairs from the front of the house to the back of the house and then back to the front several times throughout the days. It helped us get our exercise too! Thank you to everyone who helped with this project. We appreciate all of the help!
